Liquid crystal on silicon micro-display chip is the key part of micro-projected display. Except for the micro-projected display, it can be used in large-screen high resolution projected display, 3D (dimensions) display and so on. It is one of the portable devices for large-screen display with the accepted greatest potential in the market.
The researchers in Silicon Device and Integration Technology Department ( Dept. No.1) of the Institute of Microelectronics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMECAS) had developed liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) color micro-projected display whose resolution is as high as SVGA (Super Video Graphics Array, 800*600) in late November, 2011.
Frame buffer pixel circuit with self-owned intellectual property right was used in the design of this LCoS chip. The SMIC (Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation) 0.35μm mix-signal CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor)process, three primary colors LED (Light Emitting Diode)light source for micro- projected display developed by Zhejiang University was also applied in the design, which can realize 8 bit 256-level gray color display with the colorization by sequential mode. On top of that, research team in Dept.No.1 is also in the research and development of key technology in the preparation of liquid crystal cell and liquid crystal filling. What’s more, the researchers successfully developed LCoS chip video drive circuit on the success of FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) chip, which realize localization of complete machines and provide a good basis for the industrialization of LCoS micro-display techniques.
